India: Poverty Facts
Indias population of 1 billion makes it the second largest country in the world.
One third of its population (330,000,000 people) live in absolute poverty.
1 in 9 children in India die before they reach their fifth birthday.
45% of adults are illiterate.
86% of the population do not have access to sanitation.
30% to 40% of the population of India experiences chronic hunger every year, caused commonly by a lack of water.
45 million people in India are disabled, yet fewer than 2% of these receive the support they need to lead a relatively normal life.
Urban poverty is huge in India - it is estimated 100,000 people sleep rough every night in Delhi alone (many of these children).
3.7 million people in India have Aids/HIV and the inpoverished are most at risk of infection.
